My fisrt VR project

I had my first contact with VR at Gamefore. I played BeatSaber for the first time. This really got my interest.

Immerse in a sector

In our study we have to write an essay about Immerse in a sector. In this essay, you need to prove that you can do research about something that is interesting to you.

For this building block, I decided to go into the VR sector. My research question was: what is scarier a VR horror game or a normal horror game?. Even though this question sounds really easy, there was no data to support it. To test if VR games are scarier I made a research plan.

By using my own test with some help from the VR lab I got the data I needed. To look what was scarier I used a blood pressure monitor and a heart rate monitor. With this, I could see the reaction of the player's body.

Promotion video

After the essay, I continued to help around in the VR lab. Together with the teachers and a few other students that created the VR lab we created a promotion video.

VR-lab open badge

Now that the VR-lab was being used more and more there needed to be a guide people could follow to set it up themselves. For this I, together with another student, created an VR-lab badge.

We got in contact with the Stadslab of our school to set this up and they were happy to help as they wanted more people to use the VR-lab.

After the first try out we got a few feedback points which we used to improve upon our lesson plan. It was really fun to be on the teaching side of a lesson and to share the knowledge I have. Also was it really fun to see people's first reaction to being in VR. The phrase OMG I have hands will always be one of my favorites. Now that the basic badge was set-up it was time to continue my own VR journey.

My first VR game

I wanted to make my own VR game and started with testing out different packages in Unity. I first tried the Oculus SDK and the SteamVR SDK and had a lot of fun with it.

Steam SDK

After trying out those SDKs I found the Unity XR package and started using that as it could be built for all headsets.

Step 1

My first step to create my own VR game was to make sure I could grab objects on the screen and throw them around. After that I made sure I could move and teleport around.

Step 2

For my second step I upgraded my surroundings to make it more lively. I also had fun creating a virtual house.

Step 3

For my third and final step I really needed a little game so I made a classic zombie shooter.
