Maritime VR stress game

In my third year I worked on a VR stress game with maritime students and two CMGT graduates. In this project, I supported the graduate students.

The assignment was to make a VR multiplayer stress game where the maritime students could practice bridge communication in high stress scenarios. The graduate students worked on the multiplayer and stress part of the project, while the other CMGT students and I worked on the tutorial level.

I worked on this project for two school periods and with different teams.

First period

During my first period I worked together with one other student. At the beginning we were mostly researching what we could do to help the project. When we met the Maritime students I was asked to help them when they went into VR for the first time. I already had some experience with this as I helped around in the VR-lab. The difference with helping out now instead of in the VR lab is that these students weren't big gamers so the controls were a bit tricky to explain. The second time we met up I let them play SuperHot to get a little more used to VR. It was really fun to see them learning how VR worked and enjoying it.

We decided to help out by making a tutorial level where the students can learn to use the controllers before going into the stress game. As we did a lot of research we didn't have a lot of programming time so we just set up the basics before the end of the period.

Second period

In the second period I got two new teammates and I showed them my research and what the plan was. With the basics already set up we started making videos of which controller button should be pressed for what action. With this we made a little parallel tutorial teaching them to teleport using buttons, telephone and of course the steering wheel. We did some playtests with the students and they liked it.
